Officials from the Canadian Association of Recycling Industries (CARI) have met with officials from two Manitoba agencies to discuss a possible scrap yard employee training program.
According to CARI’s The Pulse e-newsletter, representatives from six CARI member-companies recently met in Winnipeg with the manager of the Winnipeg Industrial Skills Training Centre and the Training Coordinator of the Manitoba Employment and Training Services Branch.
At the meeting, the scrap recycling companies that would be willing to take part were identified and the group discussed the various commitments, responsibilities and next steps that could be taken, according to CARI.
A first draft of an actual program proposal is being prepared for the Manitobal recycling companies to consider.
CARI executive director Len Shaw says metals identification and torch-cutting are among the skills that scrap employers would like to see targeted, as well as operating forklift trucks and other mobile equipment used in scrap recycling applications.
According to The Pulse item, “the identification of the steps to develop a training curriculum, find and hire training staff, find and select trainees, conduct the formal and on-site training, and evaluate the program will provide members with a greater understanding of time commitments and enable a rough cut at a program budget before taking the final decision.”
