Proposed C&D Recycling Facility Goes Before Zoning Board

NYDEC gives facility OK, zoning decision postponed.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has approved a proposal by Serota Properties, Valley Stream, N.Y., to build a recycling facility for construction and demolition debris in the town of Hempstead, N.Y., according to a report in the Herald (Garden City, N.Y.).

The facility would occupy the site of the former Gator Recycling Corp., a company that recycled C&D debris, which closed in October 2003, according to the report.

The proposal went before the Hempstead Zoning Board on Jan. 4 to obtain a variance to raise the roof on the property’s existing building from 25 to 35 feet to allow all recycling, dumping and loading of materials to be done indoors.

Residents of the nearby community of Oceanside also attended the hearing and voiced concerns over the facility. The hearing was adjourned to Feb. 8 to hear the opposition’s opinions, according to the report.
