Pratt Industries, headquartered in Conyers, Georgia, has opened its latest material recovery facility (MRF) in Columbia, South Carolina. The company, the fifth-largest paper and packaging company in the U.S., says the new location will help to address the recycling needs of Columbia as well as the surrounding communities.
The plant will receive recovered fiber from commercial recycling programs. The MRF can process loose source-separated and baled materials. It also can handle various grades of paper that will be used to supply Pratt’s 100 percent recycled mill in Conyers, Georgia.
In 2007, Pratt opened a facility in West Columbia, South Carolina, to service the Columbia area. The company says it has outgrown that location, necessitating moving to a new 40,000-square-foot-facility at 120 Atlas Court in Columbia.
The newly opened MRF will help the commercial businesses in Columbia, as well as other municipalities and businesses, to greatly reduce their landfill costs by increasing the access of recycling services in the area, according to the company. This new facility can accept commercial material that is baled or loose, and a myriad of recovered fiber materials, including virtually all grades of paper.
Customers can deliver their materials directly to the facility, or Pratt Recycling can offer collection services via van trailers, front-end loader services or roll-off trucks that can handle open-top or compactor containers.
Shawn State, Pratt Recycling’s senior vice president of its southern region, says, “The MRF has the capacity to process up to 4,000 tons of paper per month, which will be used as fiber for Pratt Industries’ 100-percent-recycled paper mill in Conyers, Georgia. The Conyers paper mill produces enough paper from 100-percent-recycled feedstock to save over 7 million trees per year.”
Myles Cohen, president of Pratt Recycling, adds, “Pratt and the Columbia market have grown together over the past 10 years and we only see the opportunities increasing over the next 10 years. We are proud to be able to continue our presence through the addition of more green collar jobs in the great state of South Carolina.”
