Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. based in Williamsport, Maryland, has announced it is offering its Maryland customers $50 to recycle refrigerators and freezers.
"Often, an outdated refrigerator either sits unused or is used for extra storage in a garage or basement," says Wade Williams, manager of residential energy efficiency programs for FirstEnergy's utilities. "Responsibly recycling the unit is good for the environment and can lead to energy savings. Refrigerators that are more than 10 years old can use twice the amount of energy of newer Energy Star models, resulting in savings of over $100 a year in energy costs."
FirstEnergy’s utilities’ appliance recycling program is managed by Minneapolis-based ARCA Recycling Inc., which fully disassembles appliances collected through energy-efficiency programs. This includes removing and disposing of hazardous materials and components in accordance with federal, state and local rules and regulations, the company says.
