Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), an India-based company that manufactures, packages and distributes Coca-Cola products in India, is collaborating with Waste Ventures India Ltd., a social enterprise in waste management, to launch a plastic recycling project in Hyderabad, India.
Through the project, HCCB and Waste Ventures will collect plastic scrap in Hyderabad using a dedicated fleet of collection vehicles. An estimated 4 to 5 metric tons of plastic are likely to be collected every day through the program, the groups indicate.
The collected plastic will be converted into products such as T-shirts, fabric and backpacks.
“We are aligned with the World Environment Day global theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution,’ and we wish to combat the challenges surfacing from single-use plastic,” says Shukla Wassan, executive director of legal and corporate affairs for HCCB. “Our long-term vision is to leverage the scale and resources of our entire system to ensure that all our packaging material is reused and recycled to minimize its environmental impact.”
HCCB states it intends to initiate similar programs in 50 major cities in India from 2018 through 2020.
