Planning Group Okays Tire Recycling Project

Company seeks to handle around 14,000 tires a day.

The Woodland, Calif. Planning Commission has given its recommendations for a proposed tire recycling facility to be opened in the city. The tire recycling company, Tri-C Tire Recycling, would be located on roughly 6.5 acres of land in an area of the city that is zoned industrial. The proposed site has slightly less than 60,000 square feet of building space.

The proposed facility would collect and process approximately 14,000 tires per day, and would generate around 225 daily trips

The applicant has indicated that typical trip generation would be less than these amounts. Because the project site is currently operating with a food processing and distribution use, project traffic would fall within the average daily traffic already operating on the roadway in the vicinity of the site and the change in operation would not be apparent to the average driver.

On-site operations would include sorting; shredding; and granulating. The shredding would occur indoors.

The planning commission recommended approval of a conditional use permit to allow the company to operate on the site.

The Planning Commission also noted the following: the project is consistent with the general plan, which designates the project site for industrial land uses

The project is consistent with the Zoning Ordinance, which allows recycling facilities in the industrial zone with a conditional use permit

Adjacent properties and the public interest are protected

The conditions of approval are reasonable related to the use of the property

The design of the project and improvements will not cause serious public health

Several conditions included with the approval are that the maximum number of tires to be kept on site shall not exceed 65,000

No loading, unloading or other processing shall occur within the front setback of the project site

Secure approval and satisfy requirements of all agencies that have jurisdiction.
