The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced that waste hauling companies and truck drivers were fined more than $2 million for environmental violations uncovered during a statewide inspection program last May.
DEP fined 26 haulers a total of $1.8 million. District magistrates levied $395,425 in criminal fines against more than 1,200 drivers.
During Operation Clean Sweep, haulers were cited for 11,082 safety and environmental violations. In addition, 12 trucking firms were cited for 2,073 violations, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all violations issued by DEP, Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
DEP inspectors checked trucks for environmental violations, including leaking loads and improper tarps. State Police and PennDOT conducted safety inspections, looking for violations such as bad brakes and bald tires. All agencies checked for overweight trucks. In addition, PennDOT and State Police made sure drivers were licensed and had proper documentation.
Waste haulers fined through the program were the following: Waste Management Inc., (includes subsidiaries Chambers and Waste Automation): $815,000; Kephart Trucking, $182,500; BFI, $152,000; Republic Services, (includes subsidiaries York Waste Disposal and Raritan Valley Disposal): $125,600; Wills Trucking, $83,000; LU Transport, $64,000; JP Mascaro & Sons, (includes subsidiary Solid Waste Services): $51,600; Onyx Waste Services, $48,800; Odyssey Waste Services, $43,000; Miners Fuel Co., $41,800; Dilex Trucking, $40,500; Stratus Enterprises, $32,500; Speedy Service, $22,800; D & M Leasing, $21,000; Lebanon Farms Disposal, $20,500; Vision Transport, $14,500; Gladiators Trucking, $11,000; M & I Transport, $11,000; East Coast Resources LLC, $8,500; SMA Raza, $8,000; and; Iron City Express, $6,750.
