Pennsylvania DEP Truck Inspections Nets Violators

Inspections Uncover 33 violations of environmental regulations by haulers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection found 33 environmental violations on 121 trucks during inspections this past week at Shade Landfill in Shade Township, Southern Alleghenies Landfill in Conemaugh Township and Mostoller Landfill in Brothersvalley and Somerset townships, all in Somerset County, according to DEP Southwest Regional Director Kenneth Bowman.

“Department staff inspect waste transporters as part of a statewide effort to ensure haulers comply with environmental and safety laws,” Bowman said. “We want the trash haulers to get the message that safety and compliance with environmental regulations is important.”

All of the violations were against haulers, not the landfills.

The inspections are part of an ongoing effort to improve the safety of trucks hauling waste in Pennsylvania. Trash haulers must get authorization from DEP through Act 90, the state’s Waste Transportation Safety Act, to haul trash in Pennsylvania. DEP inspectors look at compliance history and if outstanding violations exist or there is an inability to comply with Act 90 regulations, the state can revoke authorization.

DEP inspectors found a total of 33 environmental violations on 121 vehicles inspected. DEP issued five summary citations, six field notices of violation and 22 written warnings. Violations included problems with signs, leaks, waste containment and vehicle waste enclosures. A single vehicle may have more than one violation.
