The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is joining with McKean County, PA, in sponsoring a mercury collection for McKean County residents and school districts.
McKean County’s recycling coordinator, Dick Tyger, announced that the mercury collection, which is being coordinated by the McKean County Solid Waste Authority, will take place during the week of April 21-25. On those five days, DEP employees will pick up the mercury and mercury-containing devices at homes and schools.
“We know many homes in McKean County have mercury or mercury-containing items because in the past manufacturers used it in a wide variety of common household items,” Tyger said. “Manufacturers are now using safer substitute materials in these items, but we need to make sure the mercury that is already in local homes and schools is collected and recycled safely.”
To take advantage of the mercury collection, the McKean County Recycling/Solid Waste office is asking residents to call 814-778-9931 weekdays through April 17 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to arrange for a pickup time.
The collected mercury will be recycled at a permitted mercury-recycling facility.Latest from Recycling Today
