The Hazleton, PA, Planning Commission tabled a proposal for a metal recycler to move into another facility. The decision to postpone the decision came at the commission meeting Nov. 22.
The proposal comes from L&S Recycling, whose partners are Shannon Burke and William Heller - both of whom attended the meeting. L&S has its corporate office in Sugarloaf, PA, and operates a similar facility in Altoona.
Plans for the location would include accepting 1,000 to 2,000 tons per day. Cranes, scales and dumpsters would be on site. The initial plans call for a 1,256-foot fence to be built "for aesthetic purposes."
But during the meeting, nearby residents asked a myriad of questions - ranging from where things such as acetylene tanks for torches would be stored to weight limits to whether the operation could guarantee it would not accept any contaminated metals.
After almost an hour and a half of questions, the Planning Commission moved to table the proposal, which was accepted unanimously.
The board has 90 days to act on the proposal, but is expected to discuss it during its next meeting Dec. 20. The Standard-Speaker
