Governor Edward Rendell announced more than $3 million in recycling performance grants to 182 Pennsylvania communities for their recycling efforts in 2004.
In 2004, Pennsylvania recovered nearly 4.8 million tons of recyclable materials. The economic value of remaking those materials into new and useful products exceeded $113 million. Communities avoided some $260 million in disposal costs based on the estimated statewide average disposal cost of $54 per ton.
"The communities receiving these grants have earned them through their efforts to collect recyclable materials," said Kathleen McGinty, Environmental Protection Secretary. "Many of these communities also have benefited from other state grant programs that assist with obtaining the equipment and facilities needed to operate recycling programs.
DEP has approved 576 of 793 recycling performance grant applications and awarded $10.3 million for calendar year 2004 recycling. Additional grant awards will be announced in the coming months.
