Lincoln Metal Processing had the lowest bid to clean up a scrap yard that Jefferson Township gained possession of due to the owner of the program failing to comply with a court mandated clean up order. Lincoln’s bid was $45,600. The other bid, for $61,884.80, came from Mountaineer Trucking Co., Granville, W.V.
The facility, Ruschel Auto Wrecking, has white goods, auto hulks, scrap metal, as well as around 1,500 tires. The bid does not include the tires, which will be handled in another contract.
Jefferson Township filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming the salvage yard created a health and safety hazard for the community.
The state Department of Environmental Protection also had issued an administrative order in regard to the property alleging Ruschel was disposing regulated wastes at the site without a permit.
The department inspected the site and found discarded tires, broken automobile batteries, appliances, drums and automobile gas tanks on the ground. DEP claimed contaminants washed by rain from the broken batteries and gas tanks created the potential for pollution.
The bid from Lincoln Metal Processing is being reviewed by county officials. Commissioners are expected to approve the expenditure at their meeting the middle of this month.Latest from Recycling Today
