The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has issued a $5,700 civil penalty to Portland-based auto recycling company Parkrose Auto Recycling LLC for operating an auto dismantling and salvage business without a stormwater permit.
The DEQ says a stormwater permit is necessary because the company’s activities, if not properly managed, could cause industrial pollutants to wash into the nearby Columbia Slough during rainfall.
Parkrose Auto Recycling dismantles vehicles and vehicle parts, stores scrap and waste materials, drains and stores used oil and automotive fluids, cleans vehicle parts and flattens auto hulks.
The stormwater permit requires facilities to implement stormwater control measures and monitor stormwater runoff to minimize the amount of industrial pollutants that could enter rivers or streams. Parkrose Auto Recycling was given until Aug. 1, 2013, to appeal the penalty.
