UK-based group targets paper cups

A number of companies involved in the paper cup supply chain have formally introduced the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group (PCRRG) that will focus its efforts on increasing the recycling of paper cups. The PCRRG will be managed and coordinated by LRS Consultancy, based in London.

The PCRRG, originally established as a special interest group, reports that it has adjusted its approach and is now seeking to have the paper cup recognized as a raw material that can be recycled to make new paper products. The group says its primary objectives are to continue to drive action around the development of the collection and recycling opportunities for paper cups and identify and support implementation of solutions to sustainably transform used paper cups into a valuable resource.

The PCRRF will focus on the following areas:

• Bring together different aspects of the supply chain to better understand the different components and stakeholder views
• Develop consistent messaging and educate the involved parties on material value and recyclability
• Identify industry wide, self-funding and easy-to-access solutions
• Conduct in-market trials
• Manage risks associated with the environmental impacts and legislation of paper cups

Neil Whittall, commercial and contracts director for Huhtamaki Group, says, “By continuing to participate in the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group and formalizing the membership, members are continuing to contribute to developing and implementing ways to improve the sustainable collection and recovery of paper cups.”

So far the PCRRG has 14 founding members.
