Panasonic Reports Results of Electronics Recycling Program

Panasonic, one of the founding partners of the Environmental Protection Agency's "Plug-In To eCycling" program, announced the results for the first six months of the 2006 recycling events program.

As a result of recycling events led by Panasonic along with a number of other leading electronics manufacturers, almost 1.9 million pounds of obsolete electronics were diverted from landfill disposal during the first half of this year. The recycling events were held in conjunction with EPA's Plug-In To eCycling program.

"These kinds of initiatives exemplify partnerships that can achieve our shared goal of increasing safe recycling of obsolete electronics," said Susan Bodine, assistant administrator, EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. "We applaud Panasonic and the other companies that support such efforts and encourage others to do the same." Plug-In To eCycling aims to increase safe reuse and recycling of electronic products by encouraging private and public sector partners to help provide collection opportunities for consumers.

Panasonic teamed with Amandi Services, a Pennsylvania-based leading recycler of electronic products, to underwrite the costs of recycling Panasonic branded products collected at one-day or ongoing events held throughout the year. Several other manufacturers including JVC, Samsung and Sony also participated in the collection events and supported recycling of their branded products.

So far this year, Panasonic, Amandi and other program members have staged 99 events in eight states (Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia). A portion of the materials collected at these events was processed by Amandi for use in new products.

Panasonic and Amandi, along with the other companies involved, are planning to stage similar events through the rest of this year. The next event will take place on October 14 in Torrington, Connecticut..
