Palm Recycling, a recycling company headquartered in Cheshire, U.K., has won the contract to manage the recycling collection for five local U.K. authorities across the North East part of the United Kingdom. The company has a five-year contract with an option to provide recycling services to the Gateshead Council, Newcastle City Council, Sunderland City Council, North Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Council.
Through the collection program, Palm Recycling will manage more than 180 “bring bank” drop-off sites through a dual-stream collection system that the company says will not only reduce the number of container types required, but also make the recycling of paper, mixed glass, plastic bottles, mixed cans and aseptic cartons easier to collect and recycle.
A U.K. "bring bank" site managed by Palm Recycling.Ross Johnstone, Palm Recycling’s business manager, says, “With all sites across the five councils now managed by Palm Recycling, the contract delivers considerable savings and logistical advantages through economies of scale as well as through a reduction in the number of servicing contractors. We have worked with these local authorities over a number of years and look forward to a continued working partnership.”
In a release, the company says that in addition to introducing a level of uniformity and more aesthetically pleasing container types throughout the more than 180 sites within the North East, Palm Recycling expects to see an improvement in recycling rates based on the mixed-stream container bank system which allows for the recycling of a large range of materials in just one location.
Palm will provide the five authorities with a monthly reporting of statistics to monitor the levels collected.
