The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has approved an air quality-related permit to scrap recycler Padnos pertaining to its effort to build an auto shredder in Howell, Michigan.
Holland, Michigan-based Padnos has been making its way through the permitting process for its location in Howell. The firm purchased the location in Howell, which is about 50 miles west of Detroit, in 2019.
The EGLE says its Air Quality Division (AQD) received 18 sets of written comments during a public comment period, and no verbal comments were presented at virtual public hearing.
As part of its conditional approval, EGLE is requiring Padnos to conduct emission testing for lead and hexavalent chromium; to meet a lead emissions limit as part of its monitoring system; to conduct “more frequent testing” for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM); and to conduct “more frequent” air quality opacity checks.
