Pacific Rail Industries, located in Colton, Calif., will be holding a public workshop to discuss the company’s proposal to amend their conditional use permit in order to allow the company to install and operate a metal shredding operation as an expansion of its scrap metal facility. The company also will discuss its need to increase the volume of transloading on the project site.
The metal shredder would be relocated from an existing facility in Carson, Calif., to Colton where it would operate. The shredder came from Clean Steel.
According to local press reports, the city of Carson is closing down the shredder, as well as other operations to develop light industry.
The company has already submitted a permit to the city, and expects to find out whether or not it will receive the conditional use permit by the end of next month.
If the company does receive a conditional use permit for transloading it would increase the amount of material coming through the location by 50 percent to around 37,620 tons per month.
According to a representative at Pacific Rim, while the company had received preliminary approval by the city, Hugo Neu, which is located next to Pacific Rail, filed a suit, arguing that the state’s environmental laws requires Colton to subject the project to an independent environmental review.
As for opposition by some city residents, he notes that the facility is located a half mile away fro any residents, and is located right across the street from Hugo Neu’s scrap yard.
