Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell announced $468,000 in recycling performance grants to 14 Pennsylvania communities for their recycling efforts in 2003. The governor said while recycling supports the environment, it also creates jobs. (click here to view the muncipalities and grant totals)
“Pennsylvania is a national leader in recycling and we will continue to support the communities that make that possible,” Governor Rendell said. “Innovative recycling programs, such as the one in Penn Township, York County, are helping to keep our environment clean and provide a growing source of raw materials for manufacturers across the commonwealth.
Since the Penn Township “Pay-As-You-Throw” program began, the amount of trash disposed of in the township has declined from 3,900 tons in 1990 to 2,800 tons in 2004 (not including the curbside bulk-item collections instituted in 2003). Recycling has increased from 354 tons in 1991 to 1,582 tons in 2004, according to township reports.
