Acme Markets, the Eastern Division of Albertson's, has been named a winner of the Pennsylvania Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Resource Protection category.
Last year Acme recycled 56.4 million pounds of old corrugated containers, nearly 980,000 pounds of plastic, 1,500 pounds of scrap metal, 800 gallons of vehicle fluids, 233 tires and 82 truck batteries.
This year’s award was given to Acme because the company spearheaded the development of an unwaxed standard display-ready product box to replace waxed corrugated produce boxes that had been the industry standard for decades. There were few viable uses for such boxes and as a result they are usually discarded in the trash.
