When Bay Bridge Enterprises LLC, the ship breaker seeking a West Coast port, first approached the port of Newport about the possibility, the management of the port was more willing to work with the company to locate at that port. However, in published reports, Port of Newport commissioners cited economic reasons for rejecting the project. According to press reports commissioners sought to have Bay Bridge pay more for site development, dredging and other costs, which also would have pushed back the opening of the facility until next year.
