Oregon DEQ Seeks Comments on Permit Changes for Electronics Recycler

MIC Total Recycle is seeking to modify its permit to remove its authorization to shred electronic scrap.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking comments from the public in regards to MIC Total Recycle, which is seeking to modify its permit at its electronics recycling facility in Forest Grove, Ore. The company is looking to have its permit changed so it will no longer be permitted to perform shredding of material at the site. According to a DEQ spokeswoman, the permit modification would remove the requirement to obtain financial assurance needed when performing shredding services.

If the modification is accepted, the company would still be able to use the site for storing electronic scrap, as well as undertaking some dismantling practices.

In a notice sent to interested parties, the DEQ notes that the facility has had numerous problems meeting the conditions of its existing shredding permit. DEQ has issued four warning letters to the company in the last 11 months for improper storage of materials and failure to file required financial assurance.

MIC’s present permit expires on July 31, 2014. Comments are being accepted until Nov. 2, 2010.
