The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued penalties totaling $64,523 against Crown Investment Group LLC, a Bend property development company, for failure to follow requirements for the safe handling and removal of broken or shattered asbestos-containing waste material during the demolition of a 67-year old crane shed it owned in Bend, Ore.
Several staff members of the DEQ identified asbestos-containing roofing and other asbestos material in a demolition pile.
The DEQ also has issued SMAF Construction LLC, the company contracted by Crown Investment Group to carry out the demolition project, a $7,200 penalty for conducting the demolition without a license to perform asbestos abatement projects and for other asbestos removal violations.
The state requires an Oregon-licensed asbestos abatement contractor to handle the removal of asbestos-containing materials.
