The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has awarded a $3,718 solid waste grant to Wheeler County for the purchase of recycling bins that can be loaned out for special public events in the area. The county is providing $1,500 in matching monies for the bin purchase.
The bins will be loaned out by the Wheeler County Recycles Program to various events.
The Oregon DEQ will award $370,402 in grants this year. In most cases, grant recipients and/or their partners contribute some type of matching monies, staff time or services. The solid waste grants program, established by the Oregon Legislature, is funded through fees on solid waste disposal throughout the state.
This is the second solid waste grant Wheeler County has obtained in recent years. In February 2004, DEQ gave the county a $10,000 grant to update its Solid Waste Management Plan.
