OmniSource Inc., Toledo, Ohio, has purchased a 96-inch-wide Stainless Steel Separator from Wendt Corp. The equipment, which will be installed in August, is designed to recover metals currently heading to the landfill including stainless steel, copper windings, insulated and bare copper wire, and picks up where OmniSource’s eddy current separator leaves off.
The separator, purchased with the Multi-Track option, permits primary separation on one side of the separator and on-line upgrading of the recovered metals on the unit’s other side. Wendt Corp. expects the Multi-Track option to be a popular feature, particularly for the 96-inch- and 120-inch-wide Stainless Steel Separators.
OmniSource will be the first in the U.S. marketplace to use the Multi-Track option, which has been operating successfully in Europe and Japan for several years.
“OmniSource is always looking for a better way,” Rick Chambers of Omnisource says. “The Wendt / SSE Separator not only recovers more metal from the ASR in a very economical manner, but in doing so it also produces a more desirable ASR to be used as alternative daily cover at landfills.”
Chambers continues, “Our industry is very competitive and any advantage missed reduces OmniSource’s competitive edge. OmniSource performed a detailed review of several manufacturers’ stainless steel separators and made what we believe to be an educated purchase. OmniSource looked for equipment that would support our current needs and included the flexibility to allow for process improvements in the future.”
Wendt manufactures the separators at its facility in Tonawanda, N.Y., and includes technology developed by Separation Systems Engineering GmbH (SSE) in Wedel, Germany. Wendt / SSE have sold more than 75 separators worldwide to the scrap recycling industry.
Wendt Corp. offers to schedule tours at its many installations in the U.S. for customers interesting in this separation technology.
