OmniSource Honored for Safety Record

Scrap company's nonferrous division earns OHSA VPP Star Award.

OmniSource Corp., Fort Wayne, Ind., has received the VPP Star safety award from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The award, considered the highest award available from the federal agency, was presented to OmniSource’s Nonferrous Division by Indiana Commissioner of Labor Nancy J. Guyott.

A safety committee of 11 OmniSource employees led by Tim Hines spent more than two years preparing the plant for OSHA’s inspection team. All employees received additional safety training during this period.

“I know that all involved have dedicated a great deal of time and energy toward this goal, which illustrates the commitment of OmniSource and our employees to workplace safety and a deep concern for the well-being of our people,” says OmniSource president Danny Rifkin.

Adds OmniSource vice president of the Nonferrous Operating Group, Rick Rifkin, “I am proud to say that our facility is the first in the entire metals recycling industry to receive VPP certification. This achievement is a living example of some of our core values—perseverance, excellence and caring.”

OmniSource Corp. is one of the nation’s largest metals recycling companies, with more than 1,500 employees handling more than 6 million tons of ferrous scrap and 3,000 tons of nonferrous metals each year.
