Oji Fibre Solutions, a New Zealand-based producer of market pulp, paper and fiber-based packaging, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with iQ Renew and Licella, both of which are based in North Sydney, Australia, to investigate chemical plastics recycling technology for use in New Zealand.
Oji operates Fullcircle, a recycling company operating in New Zealand that processes more than 300,000 metric tons of recovered fiber per year. Roughly one-third of New Zealand’s recovered fiber is recycled into paper and packaging products at the company’s two mills in the country.
Oji CEO Jon Ryder says, “Recent policies in China and South East Asia have restricted waste imports and require Oji Fibre Solutions to investigate alternative on-shore treatment options as landfilling is not acceptable to our business.”
The agreement provides for the use of iQ Renew’s chemical recycling technology, called Cat-HTR, which has been developed by iQ Renew’s commercial partner Licella.
The Cat-HTR technology is proven at large pilot scale and is now ready for commercial rollout. Licella CEO Len Humphreys says, “Licella has a number of projects in different countries, including our joint venture with Armstrong Capital, Mura Technologies, which will build the world’s first commercial Cat-HTR plant in the United Kingdom in 2021. The plant will process 20,000 metric tons per year of waste plastics, otherwise destined for landfill, into high-value chemicals, waxes and fuels.”
