Greentree Specialty Papers Inc., Middletown, Ohio, permanently closed earlier this week. The mill, formerly owned by Crystal Tissue Co., was a victim of the prolonged economic downturn and foreign competition.
The closing is effective immediately, Akers said, although the mill's 81 employees have not been at work since Jan. 26. In the months of November, December and January, the mill operated for a total of nine weeks, producing decorative gift tissue and craft-grade paper.
The announcement earlier this week makes the third announcement of a paper mill closing in the Middletown, Ohio area. In October, Middletown Paperboard closed its doors; the next day Miami Packaging officials announced that 50 workers would be laid off and its Middletown facility would be closed in December. Foreign competition and difficult economic circumstances were cited in these instances as well.
The paper mill had been up for sale for close to two years. Middletown Journal
