Rumpke Waste Inc., headquartered in Cincinnati, agreed to pay $475,000 in fines and correct environmental problems at on its landfill and scrap tire collection area.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said Rumpke Waste Inc. violated terms of its operating permit by incomplete or poor construction of storm water ditches which allowed illegal discharges into a tributary of White Oak Creek.
The company also failed to maintain an adequate soil cover on trash placed in the landfill, didn't correct problems that caused erosion or formation of small ponds, and discharged storm water without a valid permit, Ohio EPA officials said.
Rumpke must correct the problems, establish regular inspections and give employees additional training, the EPA officials said.
