An Ohio House of Representatives committee has recommended the passage of a bill that would call for construction and demolition debris landfills to be situated further away from homes and natural resources, according to a report in the Akron Beacon Journal (Akron, Ohio).
Currently, C&D landfills must be placed 50 feet away from a home. Under the proposed legislation, that distance would be increased to 500 feet. The bill also includes a provision for a 6-foot-tall barrier.
According to the report, the full House will discuss the measure beginning the week of Dec. 12.
While the initial bill, HB 397 was thought to be the best avenue to get a moratorium put in place, the aspect of the bill did not garner the support needed.
A new bill, HB 100, is expected to have a fast track through house committee and then submitted to the state Senate and then delivered to Governor Taft’s desk for his signature before Christmas.
The longer waiting period is needed because a bill to create tougher regulations for the C&DD landfills will not be ready before the current moratorium expires Dec. 31.
One concern is that the initial moratorium is slated to end at the end of this month. The bill is seeking to extend the moratorium until May 1, 2006.
