The city of Zanesville, Ohio awarded a 10-year tax abatement of $530,000 to Muskingum Iron & Metal, a Zanesville scrap recycling company. The move counters a trend that has put recyclers and local government offices in adversarial positions.
Zanesville’s City Council approved the abatement yesterday, Oct. 28. The city, along with the local port authority, has sought out businesses and industries that could help grow or solidify the employment base in the city. The recycler presently has 14 employees.
According ot Zanesville, the only stipulations are that the company must maintain its existing employee levels to qualify for the abatement. The city will review the policy each year.
Muskingum Iron, which handles both ferrous and nonferrous metals, had been looking at adding some new equipment to its yard to improve efficiency. The abatement will go toward helping the company purchase two cranes and a skid steer loader, all from Caterpillar, as well as other ancillary recycling-related equipment.Latest from Recycling Today
