Ohio Asphalt Company Defends Itself Against EPA Accusations

Ohio EPA says company violated air pollution limits.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has filed a lawsuit against a St. Louisville, Ohio-based asphalt manufacturer, according to a report in the Newark Advocate (Newark, Ohio).

The Shelly Co. has issued statements defending itself against the claim that it violated air pollution limits and burned oil containing harmful compounds like lead and mercury at 27 asphalt plants, including 10 in central Ohio, according to the report.

The company maintains that its permits are in order and that it works as an environmental steward, according to the report. About 25 percent of the asphalt used by the company is recycled. The Shelly Co. also estimates that it will use about 11 million gallons of oil recycled from cars, trucks and asphalt this year.
