The Airports Council International – North America (ACI-NA) has selected Oakland International Airport, Oakland, Calif., as a winner of the 2006 Environmental Achievement Award.
Oakland was selected for its Material Management Program (MMP), according to press release from the ACI-NA. It handles and processes demolition debris for reuse in airport construction projects with its MMP. Materials from airport projects are stockpiled, crushed and blended to make FAA specified aggregate base for reuse in other airport projects.
The program has saved more than $2.6 million in disposal costs and $200,000 in material import costs. This program will allow more than 300,000 cubic yards of construction material to be recycled over a five-year period.
