New York City has opted to reintroduce glass containers to its mandatory residential recycling program. The decision to include glass reverses the city’s decision about two years ago to eliminate glass from its residential collection program.
The collection program also is moving from bi-weekly to weekly. Starting April 1, glass bottles and jars will be collected with metal cans, aluminum and various types of plastic containers.
To promote the re-introduction of glass New York City’s Sanitation Department will be sending out informational flyers at the same time.
The city abandoned most portions of its recycling program several years ago when economic problems in the city forced significant cuts. However, since eliminating a good portion of the materials collected, strong support for recycling forced the city to begin adding some of the materials that were previously discontinued.
