The plan to cut recycling out of the New York City budget due to the high cost of running the program was alleviated to a degree. The Mayor and City Council ended up putting together a compromise that would keep some materials while suspending several other commodities. The Mayor sought to suspend metal, plastics and glass as a way of saving $40 million a year.
According to the budget, metal, which initially was to be suspended, will be kept in the recycling program. However, the collection of scrap plastics will be suspended for one year, while glass collection will be suspended for two years.
Metal will once again be added to paper, which has successful end markets.
