Nucor Corp., Charlotte, N.C., has approved the installation of a new electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Jewett, Texas, steelmaking facility.
The new EAF furnace will be part of a melt shop expansion at the mill. One large furnace with the ability to produce up to 1.2 million tons of steel annually will replace five, 60-ton furnaces at the plant, according to Industrial Information Resources Inc., Houston.
Nucor has been expanding and modernizing the Jewett mill in phases since the early 1990s, with previous upgrades having been made to the rolling mill and an automated stacking system.
