The steel giant Nucor Corp., headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, has reportedly sued to halt construction of Big River Steel LLC’s minimill, which is slated to be built near Osceola, Arkansas.
According to a report in Bloomberg, Nucor’s suit claims the construction of Big River Steel’s steel mill would violate the Clean Air Act.
Nucor, which operates a number of minimills near the Big River Steel’s location, filed the complaint in federal court in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Aug. 7, 2014.
Another news report notes that Nucor is seeking the revocation of Big River Steel’s air permit as well as requesting civil penalties against the company.
Big River Steel, which rejected the suit as “frivolous,” according to an article in the Blytheville (Arkansas) Courier News, says it expects to host the official groundbreaking for the mill in September. The company says construction is expected to last two years and to cost $1.3 billion.
Nucor previously went to court seeking to block the approval of Big River’s air quality permit. That request was denied.
