Nucor Corp.'s steel mill in northeastern North Carolina resumed shipping some products Sept. 21 after power was restored by Dominion Resources Inc., a company executive said.
"We lost power until sometime on Saturday," said Joe Rutkowski, executive vice president for Nucor's plate and beam businesses. "We brought the rolling mill up yesterday afternoon, and the melt shop will come up this afternoon. From what we understand, none of our people have been injured."
Phones were still out at the Cofield, N.C., plant, which sits on the Chowan River in Hertford County, and most of the local community remains without power, Rutkowski said. The plant, which employs 390, was not damaged.
Mill employees shut down operations ahead of Hurricane Isabel, which wiped out power to more than 6 million and has been blamed for 30 deaths.
"Our people did a great job of preparing for the hurricane," he said.
The steel mill makes steel plate for manufacturers of heavy equipment, rail cars, ships, barges, refinery tanks and others, and has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons. Dow Jones NewswireLatest from Recycling Today
