NRC Expands Board

Recycling association adds nine new members to its board of directors.

The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) has added nine members to its board, bringing the total number of board members to 20.

According to the NRC, nine individuals out of the 15 that had applied were selected to serve a one-year term, after which the appointees will be eligible to run for election.

“We had 15 candidates and the qualifications of the group were impressive,” says Mark Lichtenstein, president of NRC’s board. “We initially intended to select seven candidates to fill-out a final board size of 18, but after much deliberation we selected nine for a 20-member board. We considered going higher, but agreed there were a number of challenges with a larger board. We are all very encouraged by the high caliber of candidates and enthusiasm for NRC’s future generated by the nomination process.”

The nine individuals appointed are:

Mick Berry, M2B2; Jim Hanna, Starbucks; Brian Hawkinson, American Forest and Paper Association; Bob Hollis, The Mobius Network; Jeff Miller, Communications Consultant; Michele Nestor, Nestor Resources Inc.; Jerry Powell, Resource Recycling; Mark Reiter, ISRI; and Bill Waltz, Strategic Materials.

Those individuals add to the following members to make up the entire board:

Pam Blackledge, Environmental Paper Network; Susan Collins, Container Recycling Institute; Jeff Cooper, (NRC Chairman) Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency; Bob Gedert, (NRC Vice President/Fund Development) City of Austin Solid Waste Services; Richard Gertman, Cascadia Consulting Group; Mark Lichtenstein, (NRC President) Syracuse University’s Center for Sustainable Community Solutions; Christine McCoy, Independent; Fran McPoland, Collins, Swift and Hynes; Michelle Minstrell, (NRC Secretary) Gershman, Brickner & Bratton; Meg Morris, (NRC Vice President/Treasurer) Covanta Energy; Norm Staunton, Association of Vermont Recyclers;

In its release, the NRC says that the next step will be determining the committees each individual wishes to serve. The committees include Communication, Education and Outreach; Conference; Finance; Fund Development; Membership; Planning, Structure & Governance; and Policy.

“We sincerely thank all 15 candidates for putting forth your application and being willing to serve on the board, and we hope that each and every one of you take an active role in the NRC this year,” Lichtenstein says. “As everyone knows, we have a lot of hard work to do, but our future looks promising.”
