NRC Congress: Honors Accorded by NRC

Programs, individuals and companies receive NRC Annual Awards.

The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) presented its Annual Awards on two separate mornings to 11 organizations and individuals who “represent some of the best programs in the recycling field,” according to the organization.

 

Awards were presented at the NRC Annual Congress & Expo in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Aug. 20 and Weds., Aug. 31.

 

The awards categories and the winners were:

 

-The Tim McClure Award for Outstanding Environmental and Community Leadership went to Recycle Ann Arbor of Ann Arbor, Mich. (See feature story “Tried and True,” that ran in the March 2004 edition of Recycling Today.)

 

-The Beth Brown Boettner Award for Outstanding Public Education went to The City of Frisco, Texas.

 

-Outstanding K-12 School Program went to the Parkway School District, based in Chesterfield, Mo.

 

-Best Local Elected Recycling Leader went to Jim Kordiak, a county commissioner in Anoka County, Minn.

 

-A combined Recycler of the Year / Lifetime Achievement award went to Mary Appelhof of Kalamazoo, Mich., who has developed successful composting methods adopted nationally.

 

-The Outstanding Recycling Innovation – Product or Process award went to the C&A division of Tandus Co., Dalton, Ga., for its recycled-content carpet backing made from recovered safety and windshield glass film.

 

- The Outstanding Market Development Award went to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Compost Rebate Program, based in Des Moines.

 

- The Outstanding College or University Program went to Miami University of Ohio’s Miami Recycles! Program, based in Oxford, Ohio.

 

-The Outstanding Community or Government Program went to the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District in Greenfield, Mass.

 

-The Fred Schmitt Award for Outstanding Corporate Leadership went to Brewer Science, Inc. of Rolla, Mo., for its office and facility recycling programs.

 

-The Recycling Organization of the Year went to the Recycling Association of Minnesota, based in Saint Paul.

 

 “The winners of NRC’s Annual Awards represent the most creative and cutting-edge ideas and programs in recycling today,” says Kate Krebs, NRC executive director. “Their leadership and achievements are models for others around the nation to follow.”

 The NRC also presented two $1,000 scholarships from its National Recycling Trust Fund to Melanie Sorensen of Hamline University, Saint Paul, Minn., and Emily Horth of the University of St. Thomas, also in Saint Paul.
