Novelis Inc. has contributed $250,000 to the American Red Cross to support emergency relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
"Novelis employees around the world are deeply saddened by the destruction
and human suffering caused by Hurricane Katrina," Novelis President and
CEO Brian Sturgell says. "We extend our sympathy and prayers to the families and friends of the victims."
Novelis has also spearheaded an effort to respond collectively via The
Aluminum Association to provide canned water for the relief efforts. More than
250,000 cans of water are already being shipped as part of this effort.
Novelis says it has committed to donate aluminum sheet for the production of a further 2 million cans of water for the next wave of relief efforts.
In addition, Novelis says it has contacted several of its major U.S. industrial
customers to offer emergency supply of aluminum for any sort of donated
material they may offer for the construction of temporary housing or future
rebuilding efforts.
Novelis is also encouraging its employees to make personal contributions
through the American Red Cross.
Novelis, which was spun off by Alcan effective Jan. 6, 2005, is a
global leader in aluminum rolled products and aluminum can recycling, with 36
operating facilities in 11 countries and more than 13,000 dedicated employees.
