North Star Steel’s Arizona operation agreed to resolve a civil complaint filed against it by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The suit states that North Star obtained the wrong permit for its steel plant in Kingman, Ariz. The suit also claims that the company exceeded the air emissions limits of the permit, failed to report the installation and operation of certain additional equipment and failed to test its equipment in a timely manner.
The agreement, incorporated into a consent agreement filed last week, includes a $5 million penalty and requires North Star Steel Arizona to also contribute $2.75 million that Mohave County will use.
