North Carolina Agency Recognizes SMM with SHARP Award

Sims Metal Management has announced that the North Carolina Department of Labor has awarded the company’s scrap metal recycling facility in New Bern, N.C., its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) designation. According to SMM, the facility was recognized for its commitment to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

 

A spokeswoman for SMM says the company’s location has received the SHARP award before. SMM says SHARP recognizes employers who have developed and maintained effective safety and health programs by eliminating all hazards identified by SHARP consultants, scoring highly on the safety and health assessment conducted by the consultants, and maintaining injury and illness rates below the national average.

 

“We applaud the achievement of our New Bern facility, proof of the dedication to safety and health that all of our employees exemplify,” says Bob Kelman, SMM North America Metals president. “Receiving this award is a testament to the extraordinary efforts of our employees, not just at our New Bern facility, but at all of the Sims Metal Management facilities across the North America. We are committed to being one of the safest companies in the world and we will not rest until we achieve that goal.”

 

SMM’s New Bern facility was one of 105 sites in North Carolina to receive the designation. The facility will receive a certificate of recognition and exemption from programmed compliance inspections, which can be renewed for consecutive years.
