The Aluminum Association, as part of its monthly Aluminum Situation report, has released preliminary estimates showing 6.3 percent year-to-date demand growth for the aluminum industry in North America (U.S. and Canada) through the third quarter of 2022.
“We are glad to see steady demand growth for North American aluminum, which is some of the cleanest aluminum in the world,” says Charles Johnson, president and CEO of the Aluminum Association, which is based in Arlington, Virginia. “As we strive for a more energy-efficient future, our metal continues to provide innovative solutions and competitive advantages for businesses and consumers.”
Companies and consumers are turning to aluminum as they make sustainability a top priority for products, the association says. The carbon impact of making aluminum in North America has declined by more than half in the past 30 years. The metal also enables lower carbon outcomes in markets such as automotive, building and packaging.
The Aluminum Association says demand for the metal in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totaled an estimated 21 billion pounds through the third quarter of 2022, advancing 6.3 percent over the same nine-month period in 2021. Demand through the third quarter approached record demand levels for the industry last seen in 2018 and 2019.
While demand for aluminum in the most recently completed quarter declined 2.1 percent from the second quarter, the 7 billion pounds of demand seen in the third quarter was 7 percent greater than in the third quarter of 2021, the Aluminum Association notes.
Flat-rolled products (sheet, plate and foil) saw demand increase 8.4 percent year to date through September, while aluminum exports of semifabricated, or “mill,” products to foreign countries have increased 17.7 percent from Q3 2021, according to the report.
