NorskeCanada Announces More Cuts

NorskeCanada announced new curtailment today for its combined British Columbia pulp and paper operations.

The company will curtail paper production by 28,000 metric tons, including 17,000 metric tons of newsprint; and trim pulp production by 17,000 metric tons through next month.

The latest downtime is in addition to curtailment taken by Norske Skog Canada and Pacifica prior to the formation of NorskeCanada last month.

The latest announcement brings accumulated total paper curtailment for the third quarter to 68,000 metric tons, including 43,000 metric tons of newsprint; and pulp curtailment to 35,000 metric tons. Since the beginning of the year through the end of the third quarter the company will have taken 106,000 metric tons of paper, including 74,000 metric tons of newsprint; and 98,000 metric tons of pulp out of production.

The curtailment will or has already resulted in partial or whole mill shutdowns at each of the company's four divisions: Crofton, Elk Falls, Port Alberni and Powell River.
