Hydro Magnesium, a subsidiary of Norsk Hydro, announced plans to double its recycling capacity at its facility in Bottrop, Germany. Plans call for the expansion to be complete by September 2004.
Increasing demand in the car industry for magnesium die-cast applications, and a growing need for recycling activities, drive this capacity increase.
"The geographical position of our recycling plant in Bottrop, Germany fulfils in both strategic and logistics terms the requirements to serve our European customer base, and will be a significant part of Hydro Magnesium's world-wide production network," says Guenter Franke, managing director of Norsk Hydro Magnesiumgesellschaft mbH, Bottrop.
The recycling plant in Bottrop served as a model plant for the construction layout of Hydro Magnesium's recently opened plant in Xi'an, China. Magnesiumgesellschaft was founded in 1953 to produce magnesium anodes, and was taken over by Hydro in the mid sixties, as Hydro's first subsidiary in Germany.
Hydro Magnesium is part of Hydro Aluminium business area of Norsk Hydro, the largest enterprise in Norway. The company has a total magnesium foundry capacity of more than 90,000 metric tons per year.
