Non-Profit Recycler Opening Processing Center

Minnesota company seeks to prove that recycling is economically viable procedure.

Eureka Recycling, a non-profit recycling company headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., is in the process of opening up a 110,000-square-foot processing center in Minneapolis. The facility previously was used for a steel manufacturing facility that went bankrupt.

Susan Hubbard, CEO for Eureka Recycling, said the goal of the non-profit is to show that recycling can be performed in a fiscally responsible manner.

The facility is in the process of running tests with sample loads. The company is expected to start full operation by Dec. 26th.Administrative offices are expected to locate to the new facility by April.

The company presently handles around 25,000 tons of recyclables a year. However, according to published press reports, the facility will allow Eureka to handle about 100,000 tons of recycled materials per year.

The firm responded to a request for proposals to process recyclables for the residents of Minneapolis that should be decided before the end of the year. It is the largest recycling contract in the Twin Cities, at about 2,000 tons a month.
