The board of directors of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), Washington, has approved two new scrap specifications for post-media separation auto shredder mixed metals grades.
“Zeppelin” and “Zebra” will refer to shredder residue grades with two different chemistry compositions. Both grades are for nonferrous metals “produced by media separation technology” that are “dry and free from excess oxidation.”
“Zeppelin” will refer to thin gauge aluminum and magnesium pulled from a media separation plant running auto shredder residue. “Zebra” can contain brass, copper, zinc, non-magnetic stainless steel and copper wire.
According to the specifications as they are written, “the percentage and types of nonmetallic contamination are to be agreed upon between the buyer and seller” for both grades.
