Brian Coll Named New CEO of Nicos Polymer

Coll Materials nears completion of acquisition of Nicos Polymer.

Coll Materials has announced that Brian Coll, president and CEO, has taken over as chief executive officer at Nicos Polymer, a plastics recycling firm based in Nazareth, Pa. Coll will run both companies as Coll’s acquisition of Nicos nears completion.

Nicos’ operation targets the recycling of post industrial grades of plastic. The company has 180,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and recycled around 72 million pounds of plastics last year. The company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late last year.

Coll Materials, based in Zanesville, Ohio, recycles both post industrial and post consumer plastics. The company, which opened in 2008, operates a 150,000-square foot facility. The company is expected to reprocess around 100 million pounds of plastics in 2011.

In addition to acquiring Nicos Polymer, Coll Materials also is in the process of announcing the location for a new plastics recycling facility in Texas. Renee Coll, vice president of sales and marketing for Coll Materials, says that the Southwest is a region that the company has yet to tap into. The company is presently looking at a number of locations, but the new plant will not be an existing plastics recycling facility.

The company says the new $5.5 million plant in the Southwest should be operational by the end of 2011. The company adds that the Texas plant will be similar in size to its Ohio plant and have two wash lines, three extruders to make pellets, four granulator lines, seven silos for material storage and rail access.

The company adds that the new plant will produce different grades of high density PE, polypropylene, ABS and other resins and also make post-consumer HDPE pellets.

Coll expects that “feedstock out of Mexico will be in abundance for us” at the plant because of existing relationships Coll Materials has with auto manufacturers.

“Recycling is a regional business,” Coll said in an earlier release. “This allows us to provide recyclers with a steady flow of materials west of the Mississippi and save our customers freight costs they would have to incur to ship their feedstock to the Zanesville plant. It also expands the buying region for Coll to west of the Mississippi.”

The company also recently completed the installation of three plastics pelletizers at its Ohio facility. The addition of three 8-inch extruders will allow the company to repelletize 40 million pounds of plastics per year. In an earlier release, Brian Coll, said, “We previously only sold flake. This allows us to expand our customer base because some customers only want pellets.”

“The new equipment and upgrades in technology and engineered systems will allow us to become more efficient in manufacturing, allowing us to process more material for our customers and giving us the freedom to buy in larger quantities,” said Bob Morrow, vice president of operations for Coll Materials, in the same announcement.
