NH State Agency Plans Meetings with Scrap Yards

State agency hopes workshop will improve environmental standards of scrap yards in the state.

New Hampshire’s Department of Environmental Services, in cooperation with the New Hampshire Auto and Truck Recyclers Association, will hold another pair of workshops early next month to address environmental concerns at motor-vehicle recycling yards.

The workshops are part of “N.H. Green Yards,” which seeks to improve environmental practices at the yards through education and compliance assistance.

The DES launched the initiative to try to improve the environmental records of the approximately 200 auto yards in the state.

“The agency recognized that too many facilities were showing up on the remedial side of our work,” Pam Sprague, coordinator of the N.H. Green Yards initiative, said at the time.

The campaign includes education and outreach, as well as a voluntary self-certification phase.

As part of N.H. Green Yards, DES provides fact sheets covering safe handling of used oil and other fluids, ways to prevent storm water contamination, appropriate techniques for storing tires, batteries and other vehicle components and other topics.

The afternoon workshops are designed for municipal officials who want to learn more about the program and efforts to coordinate state and local junkyard controls. The evening workshops are designed to help yard operators understand environmental requirements and ways to protect the environment when dismantling motor vehicles for parts and scrap.

The workshops are open to any interested person. For more information or to reserve a seat, call 271-2938 or e-mail nhgreenyards@des.state.nh.us.
